48 Hours: Blenheim, New Zealand

Cloudy Bay is a winery in the Marlborough region of New Zealand and chiefly noted for its unbelievable Sauvignon blanc wines, which have played an important role in spearheading New Zealand’s reputation. It was one of the first wines to be widely exported and came to attention because of its fruit-forward style and very pronounced varietal character.

Established in 1985 by David Hohnen, the region is noted for its production of Sauvignon blanc wines and produces Chardonnay and Pinot noir wines, but Sauvignon blanc remains its hero. In 2003, Cloudy Bay Vineyards was bought by the luxury goods firm LVMH (Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy) through its champagne house Veuve Clicquot, and exports to 20 countries around the world, with the largest markets being Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Europe and Japan.

A trailblazer that enabled the world to discover the awesome winemaking potential of New Zealand celebrated its 30th anniversary, a milestone in a proud history. To honor its commemoration in true pioneering style, Cloudy Bay and Moet Hennessy invited me to New Zealand to experience a vineyard tour with Jim White, a viticulturist, whose passion for the science, production and the study of grapes (his craft), left me truly inspired and motivated regarding my own craft.

Next up, we boarded the Cloudy Bay yacht for Pelorus wine and canapés and embarked on a breathtaking trip as the sun set over the Marlborough Sounds. The following day, we set off from Mustang Vineyard and boarded a helicopter for an exhilarating tour of Marlborough and the Cloudy Bay vineyards from the air.

We landed at the vineyard after an incredible morning and Ian Morden, wine and luxury goods managing director, Jean-Guillaume Prats, president of Moet Hennessy’s estates and wines division, Kristen Pickett, events and wine communications manager and Florence Jeanblanc-Risler, French Ambassador to New Zealand greeted me.

Following our introductions, we headed to an intimate tasting with exceptional flights of six sauvignon blanc’s and pinot noir vintages with wine experts from the world over plus an intimate garden party held in the heart of the estate, an opportunity to thank everyone who helped since its creation in 1985.

I now appreciate the true craftsmanship of winemaking and have a newfound love. I suggest you try Cloudy Bay’s Sauvignon blanc and it’s Pinot noir. You will not be disappointed.

  1. As Shareholders in the Viticulture Industry we acknowledge the presence of Cloudy Bay Wines as some of the finest in the world and its Thirty Year Celebration so professionally, and personally executed by Anna Hill, of Anna Hill Events will be remembered fondly.
